Christmas in Utah!

My goodness, where to start?! So many pictures!
We had a really wonderful Christmas holiday this year, even though some of my siblings (and their kids) weren't in town for it. Next year though. :) Going up to Salt Lake early (thank you mom and dad!!) was such a blessing for me. Over the week and a half we went out to lunch and dinner a few times, watched Christmas movies, visited with family and friends, cooked and baked, had a couple of game nights, long talks with my mom (I love those), enjoyed many parties, saw Narnia 3 with Ryan, shopped, attended both our parents' wards, and much much more!

On thursday night, Ryan's Grandpa Turner held his annual party with the whole extended family at his house. We had a great time with everyone, eating, opening presents, listening to musical numbers, and watching Grace shake her booty. She is QUITE the performer.

On thursday night, we went to Ryan's Grandma Symes' party. Lots of yummy food, of course, and seeing several families we hardly ever see. I didn't really take pictures at that one though. Oops.

Christmas morning was spent at my parents' house. It was quiet and easy-going, which was really nice. Grace is still too young to know what's going on and isn't waking us up super early to see what Santa delivered for her. But soon! :) And I'm really excited about that happening one day. Grace opened the few presents Santa brought (hand-tied fleece blanket, homemade jewelry box with her "pretties", a few little doggies, some princess books, and another children's Book of Mormon board book). She was really good at ripping the wrapping paper - I was impressed!
All her loot!

Grandma and Grandpa Goates (she calls them "mah mah" and "bah bah") gave her a Little People set with a princess and castle blocks. So cute!
We were also able to talk to my little brother who is still serving his mission in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. It was SOOO great to hear from him! I miss him so much - I know my whole family does. He's such a special kid and is a major piece to our family and the glue that holds us together. Just 8 more months and he'll be back home - YAY! The phone call was also really wonderful because my whole family was able to conference call all together. It made the miles between us all feel like nothing. :)

Christmas day was mostly spent with the Turners where we had an early supper (oh my heavens, SUCH good food!! I couldn't get enough). Everybody was there and it was really nice to be together for the first time in months. It's hard being the only members of the family who live away. :(
The 6 little kids went downstairs and had a DANCE PARTY to the Chipmunks Christmas tape. They insisted on having the lights off. haha They're so cute and even Grace would get involved for a few seconds before running away from the craziness.

Exchanging gifts and hanging out.
The 6 kids all got sleeping bags and little camp chairs so we can all go camping next summer!
On Christmas night we were back at my parents' house and gave Grace a MUCH-NEEDED nap really late in the day. But thank goodness we did. By the time she woke up at dinner time she was a much happier girl. We had a yummy dinner with my mom and dad and my brother and sis-in-law, exchanged presents afterwards, and enjoyed some relaxing time hanging out together. In fact most of us were in our pajamas after such a full day. Usually we play a Christmas trivia game, or pictionary, or something - but with only 6 adults (out of 11) we decided to watch How To Train Your Dragon and cuddle up with blankets in the basement. We brought up our copy since nobody else had seen it, and they all loved it! It was a perfect end-of-the-day activity. :) Especially on my dad's new, awesome entertainment system!

For the actual Christmas holiday, there was NO snow (at least not at my parents' house... there was a little higher up in elevation where Ryan's parents live). We were a bit disappointed. However, the next day, we went to sacrament meeting, came outside, and THIS is what had happened in just an hour and a half!
We went back to my parents' house, changed clothes, and took Grace out into the snow for the first time! Well, the first time she's ever touched it or "played" in it. She didn't exactly like it... but did think it was funny when we threw snowballs back and forth.
Her new thing is the point at everything.
Oh how I love that little face.
Our Christmas holiday was wonderful and we're so grateful for our families and being able to spend time with them! Thanks to both our parents for making us feel so special and loved. I'm grateful for this time of year and that it's easier to sing about, talk about, learn about, and think about our Savior all the time during this season. I discovered this year for the first time that I have a few very favorite Christmas songs: Oh Come All Ye Faithful (hymn book), Stars Were Gleaming (children's songbook), and Star Carol. There are many I love, and I had never narrowed it down before until now. Ask Ryan how much I dislike the silly/cheezy/obnoxious Christmas songs that play on the radio and whatnot... I really get annoyed with those ones. But this year, with a little one who is listening and learning about everything around her, I found myself once again catching the magic that goes into those songs, which is saying a lot for me! I'm sorry to see the holiday season coming to an end.
It was so much fun being in Utah the last couple weeks!

O Christmas Tree...

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
How often has the Christmas tree
Afforded me the greatest glee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me.

I truly look forward to many exciting and memorable Christmases with our family enjoying the beauty of the holiday and getting antsy for Santa Clause to come! :) So much fun!

Temple Square

There is something so magical about seeing the Christmas lights on Temple Square each year! It's not only a tradition, but it's so peaceful and beautiful walking around the Temple with all the colors and lights. You absolutely cannot walk through it all and not feel the Christmas spirit. We didn't get to go last year since Grace was so tiny and new so it was great to be able to make it down there this year! The three of us went down to Temple Square with my parents. I'm posting several of the pictures I took so that my siblings who weren't able to go to Utah this year can still see and feel of the beauty found there.

Grace needed lots of layers! She isn't used to winter.

Holiday Fun

Lately Grace and I have had lots of Christmas parties and activities with our friends. I just LOVE the holidays. :) It's an excuse to make gingerbread houses and candy trains, bake and eat, and not feel bad about any of it. Ok well maybe I do feel bad about all the sweets I've been eating lately. But I only eat like this one time a year, so it's ok, right?

I admit I had a WAY better time building mine than I thought. I haven't done one in years and look how fun! I even made a car and a garage. :) My friends said it looked like a hummer.
We also got together with another some friends to make candy trains, an idea my friend found online.
Our train didn't look great... but it was fun!
Grace and I have been in Salt Lake for the last several days, and Ryan should be getting here any minute now. Yay!
Last saturday evening I had several of my married/engaged friends from high school over for a Christmas party. My mom helped me make 2 soups, a cheese ball, and a batch of Revel Bars for the dinner. Thank you, Mom, and those who helped by bringing something! We also had a cookie exchange after dinner but pretty much everyone brought store-bought cookies... It made me laugh. :) But still so fun! It was really great to see all my old buddies and see them in their new lives with their husbands/wives, and even one with a baby on the way!

Jen & Don Williw, Haley & Brett Birkeland, Grace and me, Jamie VanOrden (soon-to-be Jamie Black), Jen & Paul Jeppson, Cameron & Suzanne King. I just love these people!! So so great to get caught up in each other's lives and for some of them to finally meet Gracie.
I love my little sweetheart.
On sunday we attended church with my parents, whose ward meets right during Grace's morning nap. By the time she got in her car seat to come home she was OUT. She even stayed asleep while I carried her inside and laid her down, despite my efforts to wake her up so I could feed her lunch. She never does that - so I had to get a picture.
Our ward meets at 9 am next year so I need to figure out what to do about that nap-time issue...
Sunday night we had my cousin, Jessie Goates, and her room-mate over for dinner. It was great to visit with them, listen to Jessie's AMAZING talent on the piano, and hear about college, dating, and all those exciting things. (Please excuse the mark Grace's mouth left on my shirt... awkward)
On monday we had more visiting to do with my other cousin, Allie (Goates) Venema! Allie and Jessie and I are the 3 cousins on the Goates side of the family who were the same age and graduated the same year. It was so wonderful to see both of them this week!
Allie's daughter, Mia, and Grace played so well together. It was so cute to watch them!

We're having a GREAT time here in Salt Lake and definitely aren't ready to go home yet. Good thing we have another several days and PLENTY more parties and visiting to do.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, everyone!

Festival of Lights

Recently, Ryan and Grace and I went to a "Festival of Lights" in Summerlin. I had seen commercials for it and looked over their website and was convinced it was going to be such a cool thing to go to! We even had some friends, the Hadfields, meet us there. Unfortunately it turned out to be an almost-bust. It wasn't quite what we expected, and we almost left completely disappointed with a wasted afternoon, but the end of the event made it all worth it. I'll explain in a minute...
The sunset was BEAUTIFUL! Grace was not happy being held for the photo though.
Grace and her buddy Honor.
Look who we ran into! Mater is our new friend. We met him at the car show with lots of other cool cars to see.
Out in Summerlin there is this ritzy little area with a man-made lake - they call it "The Lakes". Every year the neighbors there decorate their boats with neat lights and music and put on a parade around the perimeter of the little lake. People can go watch the parade and they even set up some bleachers for the spectators to sit. HOWEVER... The bleachers only fit about 50 people, if that, and there's hardly anywhere else for others to stand and watch to even see the boats! It was ridiculous and we so disappointed. We weren't able to find a spot to see between shoulders, or anywhere to get a view of anything at all. Craig (my friend's husband there with us) thought he saw a place around the lake from where we were that we could try and squeeze in between some buildings. We walked/ran around til we found a little spot and finally were able to see the last 2 or 3 boats from between people's shoulders.
As disappointing as it started out, it worked out at the end. Everyone around us left after the main parade and we were able to stand right up on the edge of the water to see the 3 winners of the decoration contest and see the procession back around the lake. So I did get a few pictures. It was so neat!
This one flashed the words "Viva" and "Vegas" in Christmas lights and had Elvis on the boat... of course, right?
This was our view from across the water while the boats went around the other edge of the lake. Click on the photo to see it a little larger. I just love the lights reflected on the water. Oh and look at those mansions! Those are actual houses!
The boat on the left was towing a water fountain behind it. I don't know how they did it, but it was cool!
Grace and Honor had a great view on top of their daddies' shoulders. Grace was clapping for all the pretty lights!
Grace and I with Amanda and her daughter Honor. We had a great time hanging out! (husbands not pictured)
It wasn't exactly the outing we were all expecting, but just having some friends with us made it ten times more fun! Maybe next year we'll plan better and stake out a place on the tiny bleachers so we can see the parade all the way through. :) Thanks, Hadfields, for experiencing something new with us!
