I veto!

I have a complaint about daylight savings. The sun goes down here around 6:10 as it is, so the fact that it's October and that next week it will start going down at 5:10 ish is very frustrating (and it'll only get worse until December!). For it to be fully dark by dinner time seems like it should only be associated with the dead of winter, snow, and freezing temperatures. It seems a little depressing. At least we are still in the 80s here I guess. But to be honest, I'd rather have the SUN for longer than have 80s during the day. I guess I still have a lot to get used to here.
As for a little bit of news... Ryan got a job! He'll be working in the student center at Touro doing some filing and other things. Don't worry though, it's only a few hours each week and it's at the school so it won't take him away from me or from studying. :) He'll usually just go to school an hour early in the mornings, or stay one hour longer. It's such a blessing! Of course IF he feels it is too much at this point then he'll drop it. But for right now it's really great that he'll be earning a little extra cash each week! We're very excited and feel very blessed!

Now if we could just veto daylight savings time in Nevada.......

A weekend in the '801'

Ryan and I were in Salt Lake for a long weekend - thanks to the Jewish holiday "Sukkot"! We had such a good time and felt like we were able to do everything we wanted to and visit friends and family. Thank you mom and dad for letting us stay in your house! And thank you to the Turner family for getting together on sunday so we could see everyone. We took a ton of pics... you know me... so here are a few to show what we did all weekend:

On Saturday our plan was to drive up to Snowbird and take a free ride on the tram. As it turned out we drove up Big Cottonwood Canyon and didn't realize it was the wrong one until we hit Solitude! Oops. It goes to show how extremely gorgeous the fall colors were up that canyon because we didn't pay attention to the fact that it didn't look anything like Snowbird's canyon.

We still drove up Little Cottonwood to Snowbird and took a ride on the tram. It was free for "Customer Appreciation Days". Anyone who has been to Snowbird knows how overpriced everything is there! But we ended up finding pizza slices for $1 and chocolate covered oreos for $1! It was an amazingly cheap lunch considering where we were.

It was only 40 degrees on the top! Burrrrr.

The Turners took us mini-golfing at Dotties on 33rd south and we had so much fun! It is such a ghetto little place but that's what makes it so great and unique. The guy who runs it even lives in a little camper on the same lot as the golf course. It was a lot of fun and I think every one of us got a whole-in-one.

We visited the Bergers on Monday to spend a little more time with our new niece, Madeline. She is so adorable and still tiny at just under 6 pounds!

We also spent some time with the Montagues and our two nephews who are simply hilarious. If you need proof, find the link on the right side of my page to Lindsey and Dan's blog and watch the most recent videos they posted. While we were there, Josh showed us his Halloween costume and even enjoyed posing for us with his hands on his hips!

Here is cute Jack who is now WALKING. Ryan showed Jack how to sit his bum in the back of the dump truck and he enjoyed being pushed around in it for awhile.

Yes, we are cheezy, but this was too much fun to pass up! We decided to rake up some of the leaves in my parents' yard and play in them. Of course, yet again I can't do anything without involving the camera, so we set it up and took pics of ourselves jumping in. haha You can imagine the funny looks we got from all the cars passing us along 16th east!

And now we're back to the daily grind. Fortunately we are headed back up to SLC in just 4 more weeks! Gotta love the holidays.

TGIF!

We're so excited to have a long weekend and spend time in Salt Lake. Ryan has monday-wednesday next week off of school (thank you Jewish holidays!) and luckily my manager at work is very understanding. Two of Ryan's sisters have had babies in the last couple months and apparently we couldn't wait another month until Thanksgiving to see them. :) We're pulling out in just a bit!

Lately I've become very passionate about Proposition 8. I am one that has NEVER ever been into politics or taken sides when it comes to bills or whatnot. But this one is so important to me and I have a really hard time understanding why anyone would vote no, and I really wish I lived in Cali and could vote on it. I'm trying to be better about not stressing out when I think of what could happen if it doesn't pass. It seems like most the people I know who are against prop 8 don't actually understand it or the history behind it. If anyone is interested in reading more about it, go here: www.whatisprop8.com. Earlier this week I (along with 19 others in my ward) was asked by my bishopric to spend some time calling people in California to make them aware of proposition 8. It was a project that came straight from the First Presidency, through Elder Gibson (area authority), to each ward in the Las Vegas area. The members of the Church in CA have been working really hard for months to call all the zipcodes in their state and were in need of more volunteers. So I was about ready to start doing that myself when my bishopric let us know yesterday that the phoning efforts was discontinued. I think it had something to do with legal issues they ran into. I'm not sure. It sure would have been an interesting experience for me though! Even our friends who visited their family in Fresno last weekend said that their ward held a special meeting after Sacrament meeting to discuss prop 8 and how important it is to push for it to pass. It's so scary to me that the most basic and fundamental and moral issues that I believe in are being put to a vote!! Like it's up to the people or the judges to decide what's RIGHT in this world. I know that agency is a wonderful thing, but why can't everyone just understand what God says is right? haha I'm sorry - can you tell I'm passionate about this subject?

Anyways I just had to get that out there. :) Thank you for reading and check back next week to read about our weekend adventures.

Is there a [student] doctor in the house?

What a fun weekend! It was very eventful and we really enjoyed spending time with my parents. We were able to simply hang out and play some games, watch conference, go out to eat, and relax. Here are some of the fun things we did:

We ate dinner at Lucille's Smokehouse BBQ. It's this GREAT little place we found nearby where you can sit outside on the patio, and on the weekend nights there's live music. It was such a fun atmosphere and the food is amazing!

One of my goals for the weekend was for my mom to teach me how to make her yummy wheat bread. So we made bread while the men were at Priesthood session of conference. For the past few years it has been a tradition that the girls in my family get together during priesthood session to make something (donuts, new recipes, rolls, etc). So it was nice to cook along side my mom again this conference. I sure missed my sisters! But after talking to them, they were also keeping the tradition alive and were baking pies and cookies that night as well.

Ryan's "White Coat Ceremony". The medical students are "coated" with their student doctor coats which they will wear during clinical rotations in the future and any time they shadow physicians over the next few years. The ceremony felt somewhat official, a little bit cheezy, and pretty cool at the same time. :) The students were "blessed" by a Rabbi (remember: this is a Jewish based school) and they called up every student in the D.O. 2012 class.

The announcer read Ryan's name and he walked across the stage to hand his coat to the "coater" (literally, that's what they were called). Then one of the "coaters" shook it out signifying the amount of training and effort that goes into becoming a medical professional (if I remember that right), and handed it over to another "coater" who put it on Ryan.

And Ryan is now officially a "student doctor". He's so cute huh! I know it's a little cheezy but most med schools make it a big deal and it's nice for them to have that positive reinforcement after slaving away for these first few months.

Two of Ryan's "study buddies" (as I call them). Robert Reynders on the left and Chris Larsen on the right. They're also in our ward and we have a good time hanging out whenever we can all get together!

We bought Ryan this shirt. I LOVE it. With all the things Ryan knows and understands so far about the body, or how certain systems and medicines work, I will catch him trying to explain things away or making "educated guesses" on this or that pain. This shirt says it all when it comes to how these "student doctors" feel about themselves.

Thank you, mom and dad, for coming down to see us! We had such a great time and were sad to see you go. I'm so glad we'll be going to Salt Lake for Thanksgiving week AND we'll be able to meet our new niece who is scheduled to come into the world tomorrow morning. :) For now we'll enjoy our weather (which, by the way, was in the 70s this weekend! crazy huh! it was so perfect) and enjoy each day (as President Monson counseled us today). We're happy!

Is it really fall?!?

Lindsey and Dan and their two boys came to visit us last weekend and stayed until Wednesday. We had such a blast with them and it was so great to have a few days off of work and school to spend with them. What's a trip to Vegas without a buffet?? We went to the World Buffet at the Rio and stuffed ourselves crazy. We also took a trip to Mt. Charleston which is just an hour away from the strip and found it to be a really great place for camping and hiking. The best part about that trip was that I was able to see some signs of FALL!! Lately I've been feeling depressed about the fact that it's October but it doesn't look or feel like it here in Henderson. I LOVE fall. It's always been my favorite season... football games, hoodie sweatshirts, crispy and colorful leaves on the ground, pumpkins, homemade donuts, holidays, and the list goes on. But there is NONE of that here... except for football games. But even then, no one in our ward plays for the local high school team so we don't even have an excuse to go watch their games! So going to Mt. Charleston to see some fall colors and remember what 70 degrees feels like was just what the doctor ordered.

Look! Fall! I was so excited I had to take a picture while we drove up the canyon. :)

Beautiful scenery.

The cute Montague family! Jack was nice and contained and didn't seem to mind.

I gave Josh a piggy-back most of the way down which he loved!

Also while they were here we made sure to play lots of games after the boys went to sleep. We played a few rounds of Hand and Foot and Ticket to Ride. :) After they left on wednesday I had to fight the tears of having to say goodbye again. I hope it gets easier as time goes on. We won't be in Salt Lake with our families again until Thanksgiving... but luckily we have a few more visits planned over the next couples weeks!

My mom and dad arrived in town this morning (EARLY this morning) and stay until Sunday for Ryan's "White Coat Ceremony". It's when he receives his white coat as a student doctor. :) Funny thing is, the school already handed out the coats and the students have to bring the coat with them to the ceremony - where the administration put it on for them. haha Funny, yes. But it's all very sentimental for the students... and the wives who get to take their picture on such an exciting day. So we're excited to have them in town this conference weekend! My mom is going to teach me how to make bread and I'm really looking forward to that. It's been my goal for years and hopefully I'll be able to do it on my own afterwards.

In a couple of weeks Ryan's mom and dad and brother and sister are all coming down here as well! We're excited because they haven't been down here yet and can't wait to spend a weekend with them in "our territory". :) We also haven't been able to spend much time with Kyle since he's been home from his mission so it will be a good time! Speaking of the Turner family - we can't wait to welcome our new niece into the world... hopefully on monday! Unfortunately we can't be up there to meet her but we'll see her for Thanksgiving, and Ryan can finally meet his new nephew (Josh and Abby's baby). It's so hard being far away with all these changes and new additions to the family. But we're glad everyone is doing well and the babies are healthy.

Anyways, please enjoy your fall weather for us and PLEEEEASE somebody email us some pictures of fall wherever you are. Pics of your trees, piles of leaves in yards, your decorated homes for halloween, the mountains, jack-o-lanterns if you've done those, etc. jturner87@gmail.com We're a bit tired of palm trees, desert pine trees, and dirt.
